Smart Music

We will once again be using the SmartMusic internet program in classes this year.  SmartMusic allows students to practice their music on a computer at home or at school and perform pieces with full accompaniment.  It will assess students' performances, giving instant feedback both visually and with audio recordings, and allow students to submit playing assessments and practice records from home.

If you had a SmartMusic subscription last year, it is probably still valid (they are good for one calendar year), and all you have to do is go to www.smartmusic.com to click on the "Download SmartMusic 2012" icon.  You can login and download the fantastic new version of SmartMusic, which you must do in order to enroll in classes and submit assignments.

Keep in mind the price listed is $36.00 for a year's subscription, but the Cobb County price will end up being only $27.00  This is a bargain when you see all your child can do with SmartMusic!  Once you have the program on your computer at home, your child can enroll in his or her class for assignments and for the method book and practice records.

SmartMusic Assignments

Most of our Performance Evaluation Music for the 7th and 8th grade bands can be found on SmartMusic.  Short assessments for pieces will be due throughout the nine weeks.  While there is no actual due date, students who keep up with the assignments will have a much better chance of completing all of the assignments by the end of the nine weeks.  Students who procrastinate will have a very difficult time completing everything.  Each piece will be worth 50 points for the computer assessment, and 50 points for the recording – 100 points total. Any completed assignment will receive a minimum of 50 points – and assignments not completed will be given a zero.

Here is a list of Performance Assessments and due dates for the 3rd nine-week period.  The due dates listed are a guideline for completing the assessments over the course of the nine-weeks.

Please note that not every piece performed by the 7th and 8th grade bands are found on SmartMusic.  Pieces without SmartMusic assessments will be graded in class.

2012 Georgia All-State Band

Congratulations to the following Dickerson students for being selected to the 2012 Georgia All-State Band:

These three students will join the finest Middle School musicians in the state on March 1st – 3rd in Savannah for the Georgia All-State Band weekend!
